I adore state hankies. The colors are always remarkable. Every detail worthy of close study. Always wondering how they narrowed down the historic buildings and sites to note. These vintage favorites were sold as souvenirs. Some had state motto's and birds. Others were more general in their depiction. Either way they are a favorite for me to find and collect. I have no desire to collect the ones with the tags still on as they are highly desired and far out of my budget. I look for the ones that are well loved and ready for a sewing project. I ran across this Ohio one for fifty cents the other day...
Instead of sewing the handkerchief on top of the fabric I chose to sew it within the red gingham strips. The finish was much cleaner.
Crisp clean lines. Bright primary colors. Vintage charm both new and old.
A dear friend of mine lives in Delaware, Ohio. Red stitched heart to note her town adding just a touch of sentiment.
Pin...Pin...Pin...I always over do it. Happily digging in my trims, I opened up a wonderful package of vintage butter cream rick rack. Oh how wish they would still make cotton rick rack readily available. That polyester shiny junk is horrible. The cotton rick rack sews so nicely.
Once worked with a man who asked me why some women don't do the back of their hair? Hmm...for some weird reason this always stuck with me not to overlook the obvious. The back of the pillow needs just as much detail. Twill tape trim. Fabric covered buttons and generous loops to cradle them in.
It never fails to surprise me how much a pillow makes you smile.
Cute as can be...yes I do have a Kansas hankie in my collection. My pile ever growing. Last year I made my parents a great Texas pillow. A happy reminder of where a heart lies.
Thank you all so very much for all the wonderful Happy Birthday wishes. I have high hopes for a wonderful family dinner this weekend. Looks like the schedule might just allow for it.
Happy birthday Renee! I just adore your sweet Ohio pillow! So so beautiful! Have a great birthday dinner this weekend!

It appears my blogger has turned my comments off. Just checking to see if it is back up and running...
ReplyDeleteAnother outstanding project. The hankie is the perfect starting point and all your embellishments are just divine. I hope your birthday dinner is just lovely this weekend. You've earned it.
ReplyDeleteRenee your pillow is so wonderful. I just love how you put it together. You are right the cheerful colors make your pillow smile. Hope your Birthday is filled with fun.

I was eyeing that Ohio hankie in your previous post and now it's already a beautiful pillow! I too collect state hankies (and tablecloths), especially from places I've lived. I like their hint of kitsch.
ReplyDeleteOnce again that magical needle of yours rocked that pillow ...ADORABLE.
ReplyDeleteThat pillow is adorable! I have quite a collection of vintage hankies that I always wonder what I should do with. This is a great inspiration!
ReplyDeleteSweet. Love the happy color combination. I too, wonder why they can't make cotton rick-rack readily available.
ReplyDeleteThat is just adorable! I rarely come across state hankies in any condition, and that's a really sweet way to show it off.
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing this..I like it for selfsh reasons...lol
ReplyDeleteI have been in a delima on the color scheme in the House on Wheels..I knew there would be red and white Gingham...duh...and of course denim for Hubbies likes...then what would go with this...yep you nailed it...the bright yellow with red and green and a touch of pink...now to find some material!! Love to shop for material...lol
Hugs Cindy from Rick-Rack and Gingham
Oh Renee I can't believe this pillow. My goodness it's just stunning and so sweet in those colors I simply adore together. I must snitch a photo here and try someday and copy your color combo. Too cute I can't stand it!
ReplyDeleteI love this. I used to live in Lima, Ohio. I see it on your hankie. I bet Shaker Heights is over by Cleveland on it too - I lived there as well. You do the loveliest work. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteToo cute! I snatch up any cotton rick rack I find in antique stores.
ReplyDeleteRenee,
ReplyDeleteI discovered your blog today and wondered if you would like me to be on the lookout for state handkerchiefs for you. I am retired and spend lots of time at flea markets, estate sales, etc.
I always welcome something new to add to my search. Just tell me how much you generally pay for them.
Oh what a fun post! I love it that you collect state hankies. Such a cool thing to collect. I have some vintage French hankies and doilies that I've found on Etsy and Ebay and I have a couple of those vintage aprons with the calendar of my birth year. You're right, the letters and colors were so crisp and lovely. Hope you have a super-fun weekend. Happy belated birthday.
