Apologies for an unexpected blogging break. I was called upon to rescue a fifth grade farewell memory book that was missing a volunteer. It became a fire that I almost didn't get put out. Being a person that has trouble with the word NO I am excited to get back to my regularly scheduled programming.

Sweet Miss Meri. Just the kind of friend you long to have growing up. She never asks a thing of you and always sends a smile and encouragement.

She and I regularly send each other little gifts and this one was no exception.

The cutest little nursery appliques and bits. Wait till you see what I do with these.

Organizing vintage style would surely tame any tangle. Dennison is a favorite find at estate sales and some of them that I happily hoard are the ones that still perfectly packaged in their original boxes.

Ideal for any home or office necessity. But what you don't see are the cute graphics on the back.

A house that literally bursts at the seams...another little helper.

While your husband slaves away at the office and staples you can play at home with yours?

How cute is her label shirt.

With her typewriter and labels she is ready to take on the world...do you think she can use her husbands stapler?

Another pattern accomplished. Another new technique tested and tried. This one a bit more successful perhaps.

Applique pattern by the lovely artist Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet.

It didn't hurt that the sentiment behind this pattern kept me churning away.

Each swoop I embraced...at least it was complete.

Love this bright combination of trim, stitching and fabric.

Once it was ironed I mounted it on a canvas frame and placed it in a prime position for daily inspiration.

Adjustments were made. Too many to count. That's okay, I am glad I did it in the end.

Iron on applique instead of turned under.

Pinned in place for hand quilting just as soon as my tendinitis lets up.

This Pam Kitty fabric is so beautiful. Such a nice heavy cotton. The back is just as sweet as the front.

With quilting there are so many places to make mistakes. All of them are so obvious to me. Lessons learned in cutting and pinning. The best lesson learned...always try.

Little White Kitten

This is Fluff, the Little White Kitten.

This cute kitty gets herself into quite the bind.

Once she gets her sweet white coat in pickle green paint.

Ooh...but wait she helps out Dickie Kitten.

As he too is all wound up.

They work together to fix their problems.

But boys will be boys and tricks will be played and this little kitty will not be fooled. Yes! Fluff socked him good.

Then purred herself to sleep.

Viv of Viv's Whimsy began her morning by emptying the contents of her purse. I promised to empty mine if she promised not to laugh.

Everything has a place. I know...I know...OCD. I embrace it. Trust me everyone always comes to me and asks if I have something. No lie I usually do. I have had safety pins for Confirmation Sunday, nail clippers on the ball field, pencils for test takers. What I don't have is a credit card swiper. That has been asked. I like to think of it as a Mary Poppins Bag....you can just keep pulling things out.

With a set of reading glasses have become very triumphant.

But these tiny quilt blocks are mere stepping stones for me.

When the doors opened up at the sale this morning there were three floors to choose from. Eight five years of life, decades of service in the government, thousands of stitches in needlepoint. Five bedrooms full of memories. Here are just a few of what I walked away with.

I stood in each room pausing to think of the family that lived here.

Finding respect for the place and the people who collected and saved.

While so many among me grasped and climbed through the rooms like it was a rummage sale.

American flags hung prominently in so many rooms from years of service.

With all of the belongings it was apparent no family members remained to lay claim.

Closets full of linens hung pressed and ready for parties.

Pantries lined with every serving dish imaginable.

Propped on the big soaking tub was a swim cap only a bathing beauty would wear.

Stationary poured out of the enormous kitchen drawers.

Ever prepared...gummed Dennison was in heavy supply.

Boxes kept in order of supply.

Decorations for every occasion just in case she should need it.

...and then I ventured up stairs where our hostess crafted...

This was a house full of life and laughter.

Tutus and and recitals similar to my very own.

Every book, yarn and tool accounted for all these years snatched up in mere moments going separate ways.

Yet, my heart leapt with excitement knowing I had been a small part of these years.

Even if only for a mere moment.

Because this moment might have just been one I will never forget.

Thank you Marilyn for keeping these apron patterns in the closet just for me to find...I knew I would...someday.

Dotty Swap

Today is Holly's Dotty Swap reveal. I like to use these swaps as a way to push myself creatively. Rather than continue to craft in the same rut over and over.

Swaps give me a chance to step outside my comfort zone. This one had me ripping seams, trashing projects, and working on things I didn't think I ever would.

In return my amazing swap partner Angelina of Ruby Jean has spoiled me dotty!

Whitman linen books, dotty darling fabric and the most amazing vintage tin horn I have ever seen.

A set of cases...

It has been far too long since my last bib apron. This one has been bouncing around in my head since I found a set of pillowcases.

A bib that almost didn't make it. I stitched and restitched this bib trying to get it not to overpower the skirt. Simple hexagons on white linen finally worked.

These vintage feed sack pillowcases are so beautiful I had to make them the focal point.

I highlighted the hexagon flower with a vintage linen embroidery. Simple fabric covered buttons camouflage hidden snaps.

A wrap around bow in three of the different pillowcase fabrics complete the feminine look.

Dainty darts in the bib bodice keep this design delicate. A sweet take on my Apronology apron.

Housekeeping duties do call. What's a girl to do when you have to tidy up...call in the Super Sweepers!

There she is my handy dust pan.

Perhaps today I need to bring out the Super Sweeper. It is really dirty in here after all this sewing.

It beats as it sweeps as it cleans SUPER.

These big jobs call for the BIG dust pan.

I love its handy lift lid. No threads can escape!

Oh, I just don't know if I can get all this housekeeping done.

Good thing these pint size pretties are always handy.

With all that work I am sure to break a sweat. My newest hankie will be nearby.

Just a few of the the latest flea market treasures. My list in hand I ventured in knowing full well there might be more than my few items to find.

Our dreary weather is not great for pictures but I took them anyway.

I am a sucker for tin and this trash can was mine from the minute I laid eyes on it. (Mecky I smiled and thought of you immediately.)

Tiny Tales...I haven't found some of these in a while.

Amsco high chair that matches my pink table perfectly.

Josef at half price.

A mini lucite purse.

Perfectly appointed.

...and the most amazing gingham apron labeled Aunt Bea. This is the back. I cannot wait to recreate this pattern.

I try really hard not to back myself in a corner with any one color. It forces me to feel too matchy. When I painted the studio a clean shade of white I felt the pressure to match all things release. The addition of the wall paper helps keep me reigned in.

Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White mixed with Scandinavian Pink created this beautiful shade of powder pink.

Our old harvest kitchen table has been recently harvested for my studio. It was a yellow pine color in desperate need of some TLC.

Polka dot oil cloth makes cleaning the top easier.

It is my happy place.

A new little shelf on the end helps hide cords and clean clutter. The buckets are for supplies and color. (I added a few things for the picture).

Much better than plastic.

I am making a dent in my fat quarter collection. The perfect place for premium picked fabric must be found. Not to big...not enough fabric. Not to small...too many scraps. This sewing project was just right.

Fat quarters from Nostalgic Organics in nursery hues.

Plastic liner carefully peeled out of a wicker doll carrier. Carefully, in order to maintain it for my pattern.

Just the right proportion for the three patterns of fabric.

I stitched a row of elastic around the outer rim of fabric to keep it snug against the wicker.

This was a quick little project that allows me to see this beautiful fabric daily. I can fill this basket with fat quarters all lined up in a row, felt, fabric scraps... I could go on and on as I love to organize.

More scrumptious mail today. Viv's sweet Valentine Swap box arrived and was packed full of fun.

I told you it was full! Beautiful shades of red and pink. Burlap, paper and everything in between.

These hearts are beautiful. The contrast between rough burlap and sweet lace is divine.

A swinging kitty...already in place on a doll drawer knob.

Eye candy of the best kind.

But wait...in the bottom of the box was this sweet little Valentine....a favorite! How did she know? Thank you so very much Viv.

Apron*ology Volume 4

On a complete whim I made an apron last year at Miss Keren's prompting for a UCreate with me blog party.

My design was warmly received in this generous community.

Another wonderful blogger Suzy from Georgia Peachez suggested I send it in to Apron*ology.

I must admit I hesitated but then I figured there would be no loss.

Months and months went by before this publication came. I am honored to be amongst so many wonderfully talented artisans. Even a few friends. Most notably, Ruby Jean. If you happen to be out an about in your bookstore you can find me on your shelves. Even if to steal a peek.

Cozy

I put an order in to Joggles a few weeks ago for a half a yard of Ocean Kelp colored felt. It was a little harder than I thought to find felt by the yard in this nautical color. All other supplies I had on hand from sales here or there.

Free hand freezer paper shapes first drawn in paper worked like a dream once ironed onto felt and cut with my dressmaker scissors.

Yardsticks and rulers are some of my favorite finds. The graphics are fun. The words written on them are charming and they come in vintage colors that are hard to replicate.

I keep my collection in this tin doggy can...but I think I might have a new spot for a few of them now.

Careful sequins and beaded stitches.

Glittering in the light I can see why these were so popular.

I tried very hard to stay true to the design without changing it.

These scissors proved to be the hardest part.

Not quite the full size of its original. I did make mine long enough to house a full yardstick. There was always a yardstick next to our fridge growing up. We used it almost every week for household projects and such. I imagine this to be the cutest spot to keep a yardstick cozy in our home.

Aesop's Fables Storybook

This weeks book is a 1952 Rand McNally edition of Aesop's Fables. The inscription inside reads "To Tommy from Sharon and Linda Hammer 4-27-1953. I chuckle at the thought of this going to a boy with all the morals tucked in its pages.

The inside book cover pages always reveal the coming stories.

I would love to watch the artist render these sweet illustrations.

Lots of lovelies arriving in the mail lately. Some that were bought to add to a growing collection. Some were gifted from a swap and some were just a sweet surprise.

Candy and Cupid made the journey from Magpie Ethel's studio.

They even helped me pack up my Valentine package for Viv's Swap.

Deb the Garage Sale Gal was kind enough to send me a gift for the Valentine penny I sent her.

She nailed me spot on. Each little detail is perfect. Thank you Deb.

Just giddy over this darling package from Stacey from A Sort of Fairy Tale.

Stacey has a beautiful blog and etsy shop. I sent her a set of bins for her daughters room.

She sent me gorgeous in a box. Thank you Stacey.

Camp chairs and King Foo

While I was out having lunch with my parents today I took the opportunity to stop in at the thrift store on that side of town. It has been hit or miss lately. Sometimes I wonder if the items I choose (out of the thousands) come from the same house?

A gathering of colors found amongst the plastics and electronics.

My sweet blogging buddy Kim K. needs just one more of these...don't you think? This one is phenomenal. Amazing graphics. Printed in 1938 in Detroit. On the back are the directions below the checker board state it is an American made game for American made girls and boys. I love how it says Checkee. It was in the bin to toss because it did not have all the pieces. (i.e. marbles and checkers) Who would toss this?

Vintage aqua tablecloth sans holes or stains. Very large feed sack fabric piece.

I have direct boy scout orders to grab every wooden camp stool I find. Three dollars seems reasonable to me. Apparently these wooden stools are far more comfortable than the aluminum ones they can buy now.

blogging notes: those sweet heart pins were won in a giveaway last year from birdie blue. I am unsure where she got them.

This would certainly be the Valentine I would pick over and over again.

Perfecting a pattern...

Two weeks ago I patiently sewed a sweet little pattern. I could not leave well enough alone and proceeded to deconstruct it, edit, and completely re-write it. Oh, I have my reasons. Although, I am not completely sure it is worth all the ripped seams and fabric remnants.

Several versions that just didn't quite thrill me.

The handles were too long. The felt clumsy.

The geometric shape didn't flow with the feminine curves of the hankies.

They always collapsed and fell flat.

I did however, like the vintage buttons additions.

Either in the front or on the handles. It gave them more weight.

This one is my favorite so far. With the addition of light interfacing I have been able to bulk up the cone shape. Shortening the handles and better spacing has made it sit better on a hook or handle.

Playing with the front placket has been the most fun. I adore these little inverted pleats.

I can see May baskets, Halloween cones, Christmas gift holders, Easter baskets...

Vintage trims and hankies. There is always something to be done with these.

Valentine Pincushions

On my first attempt I used the traditional heart shape. While it is still cute it could be better.

Slimmer through the tip. Less fiberfill and more sand for weight.

These hankies are such beautiful pieces of fabric. Rich with pattern and color. They easily make a vintage statement in any room.

There were plenty of misses. My trash can was full of scraps. I knew I would get there but it took a little longer than I thought. I have nothing but the utmost respect for pattern authors. I can only imagine how difficult it is...and yet very rewarding.

Busy Day...Little Story Book

Busy days call for busy books.

I loved running with windmills or whirly gigs when I was little.

White picket fences and paint overalls.

Picture stories...I loved these too.

A money's worth of words for sure.

We still play this game with my kids for hours.

Cutest hopping kids I have ever seen.

Lost and Found

A mother's favorite...indoor games. How many times have I told my boys to roll the ball. "Don't throw the ball in the house!"

Paper chains, cardboard boats, broomstick horses and tightrope lines. Simple, inexpensive, no batteries need and you still have happy kids. Once again I am reminded how wonderfully easy things used to be and how we often over complicate it.

Basket Bounty

I almost didn't go. It was so bad...the last sale. The gnawing in my gut won out and I am so glad it did. When I pulled on the street the cars were thick. I didn't even grab my little bag that I tuck in the car for sales for fear that it would jinx me.

My hands were full by the time I made it to the garage and I had to tuck everything in the first basket I could find. Vintage goodies were plentiful and so were the people.

Little Ohio Art barn. In bright pink with a giant sunflower. It is Kansas! It came with pink fences, blue farmers and little farm animals.

Darling brushes and strawberry tin.

Honey whip jars full of cake picks and chicks.

Books and more.

Coloring pages...

Kids crafting books galore.

Cherry on the top...a 1930's McCall's Dressmakers book. Although the cover is badly worn the inside is in mint condition.

Note to self: Leave bag in the car always and go with your gut.

You have to visit a lot of dud sales to hit a good one?

Elephant in the room...

The elephant in the room....the Etsy issue has been resolved. Part persistence, part intervention, and a dose of sunshine from today made it all better. Thank you all for your kind words.

I rarely leave the thrift with large items. The small stuff suits my needs and ~~storage~~ craft better.

I imagine these two Christmas books were someones favorite. They are mere pages now as their spines are completely gone. The fuzzy wuzzy Snowman one is just about the neatest book I have seen and I have seen a lot. I can't decide to repair it or frame some of the pages. I will be sure to scan them in and show you before I do...

Good news...bad news

It was sort of a good news bad news week around here last week. Nothing major thank heavens. With the kids back in school I attempted to find myself back in some sort of working schedule...what was I thinking? Lots of little unfinished obstacles keep parking themselves in my path.

Good news first. All my newest fabrics are in and they are prettier than I imagined.

From Nostalgia Organics this sweet set (minus Happy Days as it is yet to be restocked). Delicate and sweet. Very vintage nursery rhyme looking. I really like the chicken wire print.

These gorgeous vintage feed sacks are a gift from the oh so sweet Donna at Donna's Lavender Nest. Crisp prints with the most wonderful vintage cotton weave.

Lecien fabric prints that can be difficult to find seem even more special in my stash.

Amazing...detail and color like no other. I have waited months for this Rosalie Quinlan fabric...Folk Heart. It has become a new favorite.

I have found the sweetest little Japanese Etsy Sewing Shop. I can't wait to try my hand at these feminine patterns. I want to try more sewing for me this year...one can only hope. This shop is well priced and run by a lovely lady. I recommend it if you are looking for Japanese sewing books.

For the bad news...the day after Christmas I order a handful of Lori Holt patterns from a little pattern shop on Etsy. I was so excited to have found them on Etsy I couldn't wait to start on something more advanced. Well wouldn't you know it...here I am with all the fabric and no patterns. I have emailed and emailed and now I have had to report the store to Etsy and still nothing.

(Please note this shop is not Lori Holt's just one that carries her patterns)

Complaining is not my nature so I will enjoy my fabric in all its beauty and hope that my good news bad news continues in this vein. Heaven knows there are bigger problems that I could have. Bigger than missing patterns.

Vintage Story Book Friday

However, I would like to note that Dean Bryant the illustrator might be a second favorite behind Ruth E. Newton. These are some of the sweetest images I have ever seen.

Each illustration was matched to a beautiful bible verse. Short and sweet for young children to understand.

I chuckled when I saw the tag still stuck to the back...I am sure I would have paid more than a quarter for it...

Wedding gifts...wow I haven't bought those in so long it really threw me for a loop. Nevertheless, I went right back to my hanky stash and pulled one that matched the bride to be(s) colors.

Hand washed and pressed this is a beauty on its own.

You know I didn't just leave it alone...plain like that...right?

Simple treasure to keep for the day.

Full disclosure...I used another blank linen hanky and lined the back to give it weight and hid the stitches.

Milling around at the flea the other day. As the estate sales have been high and dry. Thrift stores have not been any better for that matter. Not to worry as there is usually a booth or two with a sale at the flea...

A little bit of magic and lots of soft spring colors.

Dollar tins with doilies and bouquets. Could those colors be any more gorgeous.

A felt yard stick keeper.

This one will most certainly be mine to treasure.

Tiny plastic light stars and silver reflectors. Surely a Christmas craft to come.

My favorite way to buy cards...all bagged up so that I can dig through them and be surprised. This lot did not disappoint.

Something I could not pass even in its condition. A Mattel Music Maker book? Part book part music box. No batteries needed!

Look at these faces on the back. Can't tell you if I am scared of them or not. I can tell you that I am going to be on the look out for all those other titles though...

Hearts and Hankies

Never too early to jump into the next holiday. Thank goodness they are spread out so nicely. Perfect for vintage themed hankies.

I know they are in here somewhere.

Simple instructions found at the Moda Bake Shop...Cuts were made and pinned in no time at all.

Perfectly sized for sweet treats or a few cards.

I loved how fast they went together and how easy they were to alter.

I can't decide if I want to add the embellishments that the original pattern calls for. I am going to let them sit and cook a while.

The plethora of inspiration on Pinterest brought me to Smashed Peas and Carrots and this cute pattern.

My vintage spin on it...included vintage pillow cases and buttons.

Reversible too.

A little birdie told me it was someones birthday...

By coincidence I just happen to be putting the finishing touches on a long promised apron.

One that took far too long to narrow down. Could it be because Magpie Ethel is such a crafting genius that I fear I couldn't come close to her magic...possibly.

I wanted to make something that captured her fun and carefree vintage style.

Tailored touches perfected.

Side pleats, rick rack trim, and vintage tea towel apron front. The modern dot print was just the fun touch this needed.

Laurie I cannot thank you enough for all smiles, inspiration and just pure fun that you bring with your blog. Clearly I am the lucky one for having found such a place. Happy Birthday!

Etsy, Neighbors and blog readers....

Boredom...craft block...a few moments just to get away...I really don't need a reason to spend an hour or four on Etsy. I have been looking for a little rack to hang some aprons from in my studio. Not just any rack no I have to make it difficult. A sweet nursery rack. Maybe one with decals?

Or a Honey of a Bear! Just super cute and ready to hang. I found this one and knew instantly I needed it...add to cart...click pay...oh look the store owner lives locally!

We got in touch and made arrangements for a drop off. During our conversation I discovered she is a reader of my blog! What a sweet lady. With impeccable taste. She was kind enough to drop it off.

I am still trying to get over this sweet face!

While putting the final touches on my last Christmas cleanup I was struck by the Blue book. Lazily slumped on the shelf at the local thrift store this past year I made no hesitation in bringing it home.

Unfortunately, I did not stop and take the time to look through the glorious pages. Today I found myself caught up in it like a novel. Full of Post-War Etiquette.

Organization, linen and a sweet nursery print go together like ABC's and 123's right? Perhaps it was the fact that these little fat quarters came in the cutest set of three. That made them perfect for this project. That and linen is one of my favorite fabrics to work with because it holds its shape so well. Put a nursery print on it and I am in hook line and sinker...

Vintage looking to boot.

After trying out so many different patterns I have settled on this one. This patterns offers six different sizes and once I played with it I really enjoyed how it went together.

It was easy to alter the pattern by adding a 2 inch band of the lining fabric to the outer fabric.

But I didn't just stop there...

These sweet faces needed a center stage.

Hexagon appliques in one...two...and three arrangements.

They nestle in nicely and package up even better.

Now, I need to get these across the pond to the sweet Miss Fee? This fabric reminds me so much of all the animals that call her house their home...thank you again for my wonderful blocks.

What's in the cupboard?

Crossing a few little things off my list this week. Most of them are projects that didn't quite get finished. Some of them are projects that never got started. Just thought it was time to tidy up before I turned the calendar.

The final wall in my mending studio was painted...It is now officially complete. I was so happy to hang my hankies back up on the wall. Their colors and pattern really pop now.

Last week a wonderful package arrived in the mail. I knew immediately from the name who it was from. The size of the box threw me off. One of the most gifted quilters and dearest people I have met sent me a sweet vintage laundry cart. Renee of Sewn with Grace...I love it!

My first thought was to sew a new bag for it but upon close inspection I discovered these beautiful patches. I didn't waste anytime and filled it with fabric.

While cleaning out the studio I came across some fabric tucked in my cupboard. Some fabric that needed to be sewn.

Like this darling trio of Japanese linen with the vintage nursery images.

This sweet set of linen and cotton. More Japanese nursery inspired.

Pam Kitty Morning. So gorgeous I am afraid to make the first cut.

Flower Sugar...delicate and sweet.

Combinations were easy to find it is the pattern I am having difficulty settling on.

So many to choose I can't make up my mind...and I am not afraid to tell you I order more patterns and more fabric just the other day.

A few new things...

We took our brood to Lawrence (home of our beloved Jayhawks...go KU!) the other day to get out of the house and enjoy some time on Main St. (known as Mass. Street in Lawrence). It is the most beautiful picturesque small town America. With brick streets and brick buildings intact. Even more impressive when there is a Jayhawk on every corner but I digress. After bribing my family with lunch I spent a much needed hour in the Antique Mall.

My loot is small, but I think it is quite mighty.

Nice wooden egg cup for a few cents.

I nearly screamed when I saw this. Just the box is enough to make my day. These card images have always been so loved by me...and now I have the box. Can you even imagine the day when you got 12 brightly colored over sized cards for 79 cents in a box!

This one was tough. I imagined finding a pink one, maybe aqua, if I am lucky a yellow one, but this one is more 1968 green. Almost sage...not quite avocado. I have been looking for so long and they gave me a deal. Sold...a salesman size rotary phone at last.

Perfectly placed upon my newest Cath Kidston drawers. With a tally card (thank you Laurie) and tally sized pencil just in case I need to take a call.

Christmas 2011

The whirlwind of Christmas still continues at our home. Here is a brief look at the past couple of days. We have enjoyed lots of family time. Maybe too much? No...

Annual Christmas pajama photo. Our oldest is photo challenged and/or he enjoys causing havoc for mom.

Mom and dad completely exhausted along with the only dog that would sit patiently.

Advent calendar complete...this year we went with the Star Wars Lego calendar.

Santa visited in the middle of the night...really this is such an exhausting job I told the kids they could help put the gifts out next year since the secret is out.

Stockings full and ready to be rifled through.

Jerod was all excitement with these ridiculous headphones picked out by dad.

Claire (with Murphy's help) got a well appointed helmet for her new bike.

Clothes for our oldest Mac. Who apparently needs them as he can never get warm.

Murphy just knows there is something in there for him.

Reagan didn't wait...

Patience for our dear Lincoln.

But it was Phog who snuck off with his sweet new Pooh Bear.

The party continues as Jerod turns 13 tomorrow!

Santa's Merry Carnival

Given to Little Jeffery at the tender age of 3 by his Grandma and Grandpa.

Rescued by me in a dusty basement early this past year at an estate sale...now my treasure.

Santa plans a carnival?

It is the most remarkable pop up book. Perhaps the most intriguing page...take a gander at the Tattoo Lady! Straight out of the circus.

A Very Vintage Christmas

Snippets of my vintage treasures have ended up all over my house this year. Because of all the outside renovations and a handful of inside renovations we have done our Christmas this year in a more toned down version. Rest assured we will be back in full swing next year.

I find these wreaths more than magical. They are so hard to find and even harder to keep stored. I am hoping to find enough to tie them onto each ballister of the stairs. I know...high hopes.

Frosty from my childhood. Just a few candy jars and books in enamelware of course.

The girls of Christmas...I love them so.

Plants nestled with sleighs and reindeer.

Wide eyed reindeer peeking through the tinsel.

Aluminum tree dripping in ornaments. (yes the floors are baron...tile is going down next week) I couldn't resist. I had my heart set on not putting it up but it seemed so empty.

Everything just twinkles when the sun hits it in the morning.

A favorite rose blossom.

Indents in colors indescribable.

A most favorite ornament to date.

Each paint stroke and bevel just remarkable to me. Who bought them and where? What kind of tree have they hung on? What sweet gifts have they seen in the past years? Beautiful gifts from the past that bring wonderful memories in the present.

My dear readers prepare yourself for my boy's ruthless sports tree. There are three boys (yes my husband is included in this) have dedicated one corner in our Hearth Kitchen to our beloved Jayhawks and all ornaments related to sports.

Try as I might by adding a vintage tree skirt this slim tree is decorated with baseball players, ESPN theme song playing ornaments, golf balls, fishing bait, you name it. Below are a few of the less tacky ornaments. (There are plans to move this into the currently renovating library next year)

Yes, they do make them in every shape and color for this dreamy college.

Counter tops are blissfully decorated.

Kitchen nooks set just so.

Tiny trees full of miniatures dangle between the wing chairs for closer inspection.

Even "Tink" knows what I am thinking...

Stockings for pets hung by the boughs. While the neighbor and friends gifts await their exchange. Alas should you think it is all commercial and little vintage I have saved the best tree for last. Please stick around for tomorrows reveal.

Christmas Mail

Before we continue with the tree displays I thought you might like to see a few things in Santa's mail bag.

First...Santa's mail bag. I snagged this off Etsy this year and it is so cute. Feathered beard and jingle bells. Sequined toes and fluffy nose.

The Happy Homemaker Tag Along is complete. My darling partner Betty of She's Sew Pretty spoiled me not only with her lovely tags but the wonderful goodies she put in the box.

Elizabeth of Creative Breathing hosted a Christmas Tag Swap. Something I was lucky enough to be included in. Each tag beautifully gilded. Elizabeth added in a couple extra cards to craft with and the most beautiful houses made from cards. This woman is so incredibly gifted. They are absolutely breathtaking.

This has been the best Christmas mail I can remember and all because of Friendships Sake...Thank you!

The Mall Tree

We are trying to cram it all in in these last few days before the kids are out of school. I think the teachers are trying too as well. Last minute projects and multiple concerts for each one have my hands tied. The glow of the trees is the only thing keeping me going around here.

This is our mall tree. It graces our living room at a ridiculous ten feet. How unfortunate we were to get vaulted ceilings when we moved in. Every tree we tried looked miniature. Now, before you think that this just a normal tree wait..this is my husbands tree.

We are only allowed to place Hallmark ornaments on his beloved mall tree.

It doesn't hurt when they have such wonderful vintage like ornaments for me. Each year we riffle through the dream book and pick out which new ones we must have. StarWars to fishing. Fisher Price to movie characters.

Barbara even Dora finds herself on our tree. These mark the memories and milestones from the past. Merry Christmas

This Fuzzy Wuzzy Picture book is a recent find. A local antique story had it out for a holiday display. It is a large book with the most vibrant colors. Perfectly illustrated for the holiday season. In fact I see a few friends in it!

Normally I have a cute photo Christmas card. Normally I have them in the mail by now. Normally I have no trouble with this task...but it appears to be a very abnormal year.

A sweet little shop by the name of Belle and Boo offered up these wonderful Christmas card sets.

All it needed was a personal touch. Vintage typing paper from sales and vellum left over from odd projects were just soft enough.

Photoshop and a vintage Christmas card greeting. Careful cutting on my paper cutter and clear scrapbook tape made this simple.

All that is left is to finish these up with stamps and addresses.

Now if I can just get back to my normal I might get these out in the mail before Christmas?

Applique

Applique...quilting? I marvel at it, dabble in it, try my best. It seems I am still just outside the circle of getting it right. Rather than start large like I have before I thought I would try small...perhaps pocket size.

Playful Patchwork is a wonderful book that took me step by step through the process. Gathering up all my little pieces of fabric from an early estate sale by color. I added just a few new pieces to tie them together.

Using the freezer paper method of paper piecing I finished up a pocket sized square and added a ruffle and button embellishment.

Lining chosen from a vintage tablecloth.

Loop attached for dishrags.

Denim ruffle and strings.

Linen backdrop perfect for a crisp look.

Just as cute on the inside.

What-Ever-You-Want-Wednesday

NFS

Lately it is becoming a pet peeve these acronyms. NFS...I understand dealers need props to hold their goods but honestly they are there to sell your goods. The last couple outings in the stores nearly every item I got excited about came with a tag marked NFS...not for sale. I went looking for shelves and found the most darling enamel shelves made from an old kitchen tables leaves. Some genius had unhinged them and made them into the cutest shelves...marked NFS. It's enough to make you want to quit...almost.

I spent the weekend with my parents while the boys where away on a scout trip. The girls spent the day in a local town shopping for antiques. I am always surprised how different things are regionally. These are the lucky ones that made it home with me.

Red rimmed enamelware perfect for Christmas and a housecoat pattern I have hunted for.

I am a sucker for seersucker. This apron is child size and just darling.

A gathering style. Perfect for eggs and laundry.

Happy Homemaker Tag Along Ends...

Elizabeth said it would go by quick and that it did. Twelve dangling tags all in nursery rhyme theme hang above my bulletin board. They remind me of persistence, friendship, and all the vintage images that inspire my daily work.

These are my final two installments in the Happy Homemaker tag along.

November finds us warmed over a stove full of holiday food. Most often a pie or two. Something my Little Jack Horner knows all about.

With just a touch of paper left to add detail Jack is mostly on his own. Vintage buttons and dark violet millinery brighten up the tag top.

There it is...I knew he left his horn somewhere!

December leaves me dreaming if Mother Goose really did spend time with Santa Clause as they are ever so much alike.

I was on the fence about this image. You see Frosty was such an easy sell but when I found Mother Goose and Santa complete with poinsettia hat pin and goose jingle bell collar I knew it was a must.

For now I close the lid on my sweet tag box. Lucky it is full to the brim.

And send it off to its new owner...Miss Betty. Rather than wallow in the sadness that this project is over I will relish in my accomplishment and wipe the sweat from my brow and run straight for the next one...hmmm...fabric or paper?

A treasure from across the pond!

Aside from all the fantastic thrift scores and estate sale jaunts...this year I have met some wonderful women who have incredible artistic talent. Whether yielding a needle, brush or glue gun. You all inspire me to be better and make better things. Late last week my oldest was checking the mail (our daily task after school). I hand him the key and he steps out of the car and gets it for me. Then he hands it over while I sit there in anticipation of a pattern, fabric or mere catalog. But this day he kept one back and later pulled it out of his pocket...

It was a tiny package from Chipper Nelly. Beautifully graced with a Queen's Royal stamp. Fee is a sweet mother of three darling boys. Her dear husband Cleggy showers their English cottage generously with animals and her posts are incredibly witty and real. Sometimes a mannequin can be seen in the garden! On top of it all she creates incredible art pieces, blocks and more.

If you are lucky enough to live in England you too can get your hands on one of her creations at her virtual shop Not On the High Street.

These are Fee's pictures of the blocks she created just for me. I cannot begin to tell you how remarkable the detail is. Now, these aren't just your run of the mill blocks with scrapbook paper slapped on them. The finish is impeccable.

We have played with the configuration over and over.

The options are limitless.

Thank you Fee for such an incredible treasure. I am so very touched that you shared your art with me and to have a piece of it in my home. The inspirations are limitless here and for that I am thankful.

Ladies and gentlemen hold on to your hats...I closed on the paperwork for our renovations today. Not without a fight...but the final check has been cut and hopefully it will all be over within a few days. My husband and I will be doing the renovations here for the next couple of years, at least until the sting wears off.

This tiny reno is nearly complete too. (Claire and I have one wall left to paint.) I finished the desk today. Formerly our kitchen table we have done a bit of a shuffle. It took no time to move into the doubled size. A side to sew and a side sketch...

This is the top of an old hutch I backed in vintage nursery wallpaper and painted a grey blue.

Space...oh the space!

I spent a few hours folding and sorting fabric. Loving each piece just as I did when I found it.

Sprinkling little bits of holiday throughout the house this year. Everything is turning up in different places with all the renovations. It has been fun to see where things fit.

Santa's case is right inside the front door. This year Kim K. was kind enough to add the sweet little doll case decked out in glitter. Could it fit any better. When we were kids we didn't have stockings we had boots. These are a newer pair that bring back memories.

I had so many new additions to my littles this year. This is my favorite spot to place them.

It is my favorite day of the week. Little Vintage Storybook Friday. I easily chose a favorite story that was recently pulled out of the Christmas storage. I cannot remember where I came across this but I adore the darling fifties family it portrays. That darling angel on the top of the tree doesn't hurt either.

Santa came a little early for me this year. Well, at least my order did and I just couldn't stand the fact that I knew what was in the box. I opened it and mania ensued. You will see...

I am not a willing wallpaper fan but be still my heart when I ran across this Cath Kidston paper.

Two days...loads of paste and one wall later I am still in love!

The other walls will get a fresh coat of Swiss Coffee White.

This wall will be a full wall of shelves.

Tomorrow there will be a lot of painting and priming.

Candy Canes and Reproductions

While over reading at a favorite blog last month I happened across this Holiday apron pattern. Before I get too caught up in my thoughts I have to tell you how wonderful Barbara's blog is. Aptly named Oodles and Oodles it is filled with vintage finds and family stories. She is a talented writer who invites you in and shares with her funny quips and smart facts. If you haven't already subscribed to her posts I know you will and if your lucky you can snag an item from her Etsy shop or her Ebay auction.

With my holiday corsages out and ready for decorating I knew this would be a perfect peppermint pairing.

I do love patterns but it seems I have such a hard time following them exactly. I brought the ruffle all the way up to the ties. My peppermint stick is donning a white bow instead of a red one. The sash needed more contrast so I chose stripes? The one thing I did follow was the tie lengths and they came out too short for my liking. You can barely tie the bow? As I look at the cover photo on the pattern I notice these little models have hardly a waist anyway. Maybe I just need to bake and not actually eat the cookies!

Barbara, thank you for the daily inspiration. I had such fun altering this reproduction. It is fun to step back in time and pretend even if for just a moment....

Ornaments

It is a favorite holiday. The sweetest graphics. Cutest books. Sparkly baubles hanging off the tree and anything else I can adorn. I really cannot think of a reason not to like it...maybe the crowds? Each year I try to create an ornament from my yearly vintage finds. This year was no exception.

...but first I have to share why this is Reagan's favorite season. A house full of warm lit trees draped in fuzzy skirts. This is his place to be for the next month.

Last year I paired these sweet bells with vintage package toppers. I didn't realize what a find I had in these toppers. I haven't come across them since.

With white snowflakes as my base I used reflectors to hold a vintage taper wreath and set of bells.

Two reflectors and loads of feather tree balls.

Last year I found an entire lot of these vintage floral stakes. The stick is easily removed and sits nicely on the snowflake base. Some glossy millinery and a reflector flower or two.

Jingle bells and plastic holly. Little bits of juniper for show. This one might just be my favorite. These always go out to family and friends. I tuck away a few for the kids. When they have a tree of their own I hope to arrive at their first Christmas away from home with a box full of ornaments.
