Wonder

Fascination with the mystery of chalk ware is not new to me.  I love the creamy depth of the paint.   The way the chips look almost purposeful.    Decorative purposes aside, these pieces ooze personality.  I have passed on many of them....two had to came home with me today.

With only an hour to spare before an appointment, I slipped into a way too expensive shop and found this couple.  I was smitten with their color and luster.  There is an empty bird cage in my bedroom that will make a nice home.

Sometimes when you see something you just have to have it.
This has my name all over it.  I laughed when I got to the register with it.  The cashier wanted to know if I was decorating a nursery?  That of course never occurred to me, I liked it for its color and kitsch.

The tag said it was a display piece however, after further inspection I realized it is half of a horsey ride for toddlers.  It is cleverly stamped with the name Wonder.  I can't wait to put this on the wall or tuck it in with some sweet displays.

Blue is becoming my new favorite color...another cute vanity tray.  Tole painted too.  I have no idea why there is a hole in one or if it is supposed to be?  There doesn't appear to be any damage or anything missing.  Lovely just the same.
I am struck as to why all of these items no longer continue to be made.  Why did they stop making the cute vanity trays with such sweet workmanship?  How come chalk ware became impossible to purchase?  Why did Wonder get replaced with an excersaucer?  These are the questions I ponder and ultimately try to answer...for now I will continue to collect.

Lovely colors on all your latest acquisitions. I wonder if the hole in the one container on your vanity tray was for tissues or cotton balls?

Have a splendid week ahead. May your thrifting and sewing be fruitful!

I think the hole was for bobbie pins. I have a set from my mom in that fake ivory which is a plastic of sorts and one of them has the opening in the top. Love all your sweet finds. I love chalkware too and don't have a single one, never have come across one I would consider paying the price for.

First off I LOVE the wonder horse...I would have picked up that fellow too. The canister with the hole? I had one that I sold on Etsy that was super similar that was used as a string holder...now that does not make sense with a vanity set, but it did work mighty well as a string container (I bought it with original ball of string inside)

Hey Renee,

You lucky, lucky girl....again! I'm pretty stinkin' jealous, especially with the pony.

Your package should arrive any day now.

Hugs,

Love your finds! We have the same eye for vintage baby and child things. I don't know how many times I have been asked if I am decorating a nursery.( I have 7 kids so often I have been) but I still am drawn to vintage kid items and buy them up when I find them even though no more nursery decorating. Love seeing your finds!

Hello Renee!
My name is Audrey and it's very nice to "meet you"!
I've just discovered your wonderful blog and I grinned with delight as I looked at your pictures and read your posts! I share the same love of vintage treasures as you do and get just as excited about my kitschy finds and cute collectibles! I love your "new" Robin's Egg Blue, Tole-painted Vanity Tray. It's so pretty! The container with the hole on top is, I believe, what was once a "hair receiver". I'm not sure what era this vanity set came from, however, hair receivers were a common piece of vanity sets many years ago. So, that's what I think it is.... Either that, or the knob on top is just missing!
I'm so happy to have found your blog -- I love to share in other people's enthusiasm - it brings a smile to my heart. Looking forward to your new posts - will check back daily as I have bookmarked you to my task bar with my other favorite blogs that I follow.
Have a wonderful day!
Take good care,
Audrey
