Modern Vintage Twirl

It didn't take much to get my scissors into another tablecloth.  I found this one a few weeks ago at the flea.  The price was right and the colors were charming.  The weight of these tablecloths make them perfect for clothing.  I can't buy good fabric for the twelve dollars I paid for this designer tablecloth.

I must admit that I have never shirred fabric before.  There was a lot of trial and error on my part.  I had trouble keeping my seam lines straight with the subsequent rows because the fabric was already gathering.  In the end you couldn't really tell and I always leave my shirt untucked so I let it go.

I love pockets.  So much so that I think they should be on wedding dresses.  They make every thing more comfortable.  There was not enough fabric from the tablecloth to make the inset fabric.  I used some pink linen I had on hand to make it work.  The linen had the right weight and color.

It is nice to know that I will not be wearing something off the rack tomorrow in the 100'F heat.  Skirts always feel cooler to me.  I am wearing it with my basic white tank top.  Some flip flops and I should be set...right up until I have to get out of the car!

I am so happy with these pockets.  The seam stays flat.  They are nice and deep.  It gives a nice dimension to a simple skirt.

Did I tell you how much I like the stripes?
I might be sweating bullets tomorrow but at least I will be styling...I am more worried about my kiddo on the field in a full polyester outfit and no shade.  Fingers crossed it will be worth the sweat, heat, sun and hopefully the win!

You will be quite stylish in that adorable skirt...hope the heat is not too bad. (you will look good none the less)
If you ever get the itch to move from Kansas, please consider Oregon..would love to have your handy needle and talent nearby (would love to have a personal seamstress...that would make my day!)

WOW. I was a vintage tablecloth collector for years and it used to pain me to see any that weren't already ruined in some way cut BUT ya know, people don't use tablecloths anymore, better to enjoy them and get use from them. Been thinking of crafts and sewing for them myself.

Renee-you "hit it out of the park" with this skirt. Darling! I think the pink inside the pockets looks great and breaks up the print a bit. Your white tank finishes off a cool and comfortable summer look! Good luck to the team. Polyester uniforms...I always wondred why they chose that heavy, sweat producing fabric for boys to wear for sports. A mother didn't make that decision, that's for sure!

That looks great, Renee! LakeForestKitchenLady has alot of reproduction tablecloths if you run out of vintage ones! I have a green one like the pink one you used that I gave 24.00 + shipping for. Then turned around and found a vintage one like it for 3.00 at a flea market. The repros are a heavy fabric, which would be great for cutting into!!
I hope all of the kids are safe tomorrow. I hope you all aren't quite as hot tomorrow. They are calling for us to be even hotter. I'm Melting!!

As much as I can't bear to cut up any of my good tableclothes (the really damaged ones, I can), I have to say that is a really cute skirt, esp. paired up with the simple tee.
We have triple digit heat in summer and light skirts are the way to go...fortunately, our Goodwill always has cute summery skirts for cheap so that's where I get them.
